Another Change to the Cafeteria Schedule

After a review of the positive and negative benefits and effects of the current cafeteria schedule we are piloting a new schedule. The new schedule will try and correct the problems and keep the positives. We will begin eating using the new times on 2-2-09. Some of the negatives with the current schedule is the cafeteria is too loud and the children do not have enough time. It was also difficult for the staff to keep ahead of the meals. The new schedule will deal with these concerns. There were many positives to the current schedule. The big one was that students had longer to eat and were able to finish their lunches. Some grades had extended time in the morning for reading. Some non-anticipated positives benefits included the cafeteria being easier to clean, and student behavior improved. The new lunches will be five minutes shorter, but longer that they what they were and recess will be back to its original time. The students will still sit in the seats they are currently using in the cafeteria. Hopefully this combination of keeping the positives and adjusting for the negative will create a great plan.
The new time schedule is as follows.

Grade Lunch Recess
First 11:10- 11:35 11:35-11:55
Second 11:35- 12:00 12:00- 12:20
Third 12:00- 12:25 12:25-12:45
Fourth 12:25-12:50 12:50- 1:10
Fifth 12:50:1:15 1:15- 1:35

Cafeteria Schedule

As you know, we have been running a pilot on a new time schedule in the cafeteria. The initial feedback is mixed, but most of it is positive. I do not think any schedule will make everyone happy. In January, I will meet with a group of stakeholders and see if we cannot address some of the concerns and keep the positives we like about the schedule. Some of the positives and negatives are listed below. Although it is important to consider positives and negatives, some advantages may outweigh all of the negatives. I look forward to your feedback.

Positives
It allows all students to have more time to eat their lunch. Every student in the new schedule gets at least thirty minutes.

It compacts the lunch schedule, No student has to eat before 11:20 and lunches are over earlier.

It provides more uninterrupted Language arts time in some grades.

The behavior of the children, although never out of control, has improved.

Clean-up between lunches has improved significantly.

Negatives

It does not allow for as much recess time. Most grades have five minutes less recess time.

The cafeteria is louder.

Some academic schedules will need to be realigned.

Parents cannot eat lunch wit their children
